In the News

Local TV stations, as well as CNN, did stories on the successful placement of service dog, Muffet, with Jolena, a young girl with autism.

Goals

It is easy to see that TLCAD is growing rapidly and planning carefully for the future. One of our goals is to have a fully functioning training center within the next year. The facility would allow us to be as effective as possible in managing our resources and time. Currently our trainers spend precious time driving all over the county for training classes and one-on-one training sessions with clients. A centralized training facility would allow trainers to use their time for what they do best—train assistance dogs. It would also allow TLCAD to recruit more trainers and create a center where other trainers from around the country could come and learn. This facility would also:

• Promote education and increase public awareness of autism

• Develop strategic alliances with other autism organizations

• Encourage research by establishing links with local universities and the medical profession in creating new solutions for families of children with autism

As mentioned above, TLCAD’s “Train the Trainer” Program is high on our list. There are very few assistance dog schools that train dogs for autism in the U.S., and even fewer “Train the Trainer” programs. Training dogs for children with autism is a unique area of expertise within the arena of assistance dog training. Very few assistance dog programs are experienced with the specialized techniques necessary to make a successful placement. TLCAD trainers are certified, have attended conferences and traveled to Canada to National Service Dogs (who have 10 years background with this clientele) to get specialized training for autism service dogs. In addition, our trainers have placed dogs with children having severe disabilities and know the techniques of “third person handling”.

TLCAD is beginning a Capital Campaign this fall to get us started on our quest for a facility. We will also begin an endowment fund with Endow San Diego, part of the San Diego Foundation.

Our future is a bright one!
