TLCAD Service Teams
A TLCAD Trainer and a TLCAD dog, having completed approximately 18 months of Assistance Dog training, are matched with an individual with limited abilities. This creates a team dedicated to meeting the individual’s specific needs. It requires approximately six months of advanced customized training before the dog is placed.
Disciplines: Mobility-Assistance, Seizure-Response, Specialty
Leash-On-Life: Assistance Dog Program for Children with Autism
This program pairs specially trained Service Dogs and children with autism. Autism Service Dogs are selected specifically for their stability, calmness and steady reaction to loud noises and constant motion. The dog is placed with a family that is already quite stressed, while coping with many forms of therapeutic appointments throughout each day. These dogs provide increased safety for the child and reduce the occurrences of emotional outbursts. Additionally, as a result of the presence of a new, constant companion, a child's focus and attention span is improved. All of these factors, plus many others, help to make each day a little easier for these children and their families.
At Ease Service Dogs: Assistance Dog Program for Wounded Warriors
The mission of the TLCAD At Ease Service Dog Program is to train and provide Service Dogs to Wounded Warriors to facilitate their return to public life as independently as possible. Many Wounded Warriors returning from Iraq and Afghanistan suffer from mobility problems, post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury and other physical and emotional challenges. The focus of the At Ease Service Dog Program is the individual Wounded Warrior. Each has their own unique requirements that TLCAD addresses by matching the needs and personality of the individual to the dog's strengths and personality. Customized training takes place for each placement. The dog, the personalized training and the follow-up are all provided at no cost to the Wounded Warrior.
Facility Teams
A Facility Team works in specific facilities such as medical institutions or schools and functions as a third party. The team consists of a TLCAD Facilitator, the Facilitator’s certified dog and a person with limited abilities who requires the use of an Assistance Dog on a temporary, periodic basis. The dogs are owned by the Facilitator, maintain residence with them and together they provide this service on a regular basis.
Tune-Ups
Tune-ups are provided for Certified TLCAD Assistance Dogs and their Handlers. This program includes classes and private instruction with TLCAD Trainers to assist the Handler in strengthening their dog’s skills, improving their working relationship and learning new behaviors.
